OUR WORK

Our Work > Organizing Domestic Workers

Organizing Domestic Workers

FADWU organizes domestic workers to share knowledge, learn skills and build collective power through unity and strength.
When domestic workers are united, our voices resonate and society hears what we say. No domestic worker has to face their burden alone, because when we support each other and mobilize with purpose, we are stronger in the fight for our rights.
When we have greater awareness and understanding,  we can help our friends and uplift our community.
We conduct regular outreach in MDW communities so we can learn more about workers’ concerns, support people facing problems, and recruit more members to our union.

Leaders’ Testimonies

PLU Vice Chair

Before I joined the union, I didn’t realize I was being charged illegal fees by the employment agency. I used to spend my day off socializing in Central, until one day PLU a[[rpached me for a statement regarding their research project on the overcharging issue [Between a rock and a hard place].

After that, I joined PLU’s reaserch team and I’ve been part of the union ever since. Now that I know my rights, I believe I should help more workers educate and empower themselves and bring more awareness to employers.

FADWU Treasurer, UNDW Chair

I have been a founding member of UNDW since 2005. To stay in the union for this long, it takes a lot of commitment, hard work and sacrifice. I have given up a lot of my personal time nd family time. It’s not easy.

But I wasn’t this strong before I joined the union. From where I stand now, I am standing for my rights and the rights of my sisters, and all my growth has come from my union.

FADWU Chair, TMWU Chair

When I first came to Hong Kong, and worked for my first employer, I was sleeping with chickens! Today, I am perfectly proficient wit using computers for work. And I can speak fluent Cantonese and Englis. I learned everything from the union. I believe if you work from your heart, you can do anything. And I am always learning more and more becuase I love to help others. All the Thai migrants know our Union, and our membership keeps growing.

But what makes me really proud of my union is that our members can speak up even louder than I do!

FADWU Vice Chair, ODWU Chair

I used to always go to church, whenever there was a problem, we would just keep parying. Then I learned about union organizing.

I have been involved with unions for a long time. I helped found ODWU in 2008 and in 2010 ODWU was a founding affilate when FADWU was established. So many things have happened over the years, and a lot has changed. But from the beginning until now, the union teaches all of us about our rights, and it fights for our rights. It helps us to help ourselves and help others.

Help Build Dignity, Power & Respect

FADWU empowers workers from marginalized backgrounds and builds bridges for diverse communities to achieve solidarity to fight for labour rights and equality. More resources to carry out our work on a greater scale will ensure we can make decisive interventions against labour inequality and injustice in the long term.
