Hundreds of migrant domestic workers (MDW) in Hong Kong are systematically denied their fundamental right to healthcare by employers illegally terminating their contracts upon being diagnosed with a serious illness, leaving them vulnerable and with few options for treatment.

In the past two years, FADWU has received 8 cases of South Asian migrant domestic workers (MDWs) who were severely underpaid by their employers. Their employers, mostly from India and Nepal, do not follow the Employment Ordinance and the employment contract, and their illegal conduct faces little consequence.

Migrant domestic workers leaders of FADWU and several migrant groups and NGOs met together with the Labour Department today (31 July 2024) at the Labour Department’s headquarter in Central. Seven officials led by Ms Bernadette Lam, Assistant Commissioner (Policy Support) met with FADWU leaders alongside with other migrant domestic workers (MDWs) groups. FADWU demands for a wage increase to $6300 and food allowance to $2700.
23 May, 2024
The HKSAR government promulgated the revised Code of Practice for Employment Agencies (CoP) on 9 May this year. FADWU finds the revised CoP disappointing as there is no further action for legislation. Instead, we are concerned that some new revisions can undermine MDWs’ rights and lead to widespread abuse and exploitation.
